Jonathan Ames (Jason Schwartzman), uno scrittore di Brooklyn difficolt con un problema di acqua potabile, tenta di fronte alla disgregazione del suo recente con la sua ragazza da reinventare la sua vita. Su un capriccio, Ames decide di emulare i Romanzieri suoi idolo Dashiell Hammett e Raymond Chandler che presentano come un detective privato e offrendo i suoi servizi attraverso un annuncio in linea.
